There are two kinds of physicians licensed to practice medicine in the U.S.- DOs and MDs. DOs (Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine or Osteopathic Physicians) attend 4 years of medical school, complete residency training in their chosen medical specialty, and pass licensing exams, just like their MD colleagues. DOs specialize in all areas of traditional medicine, just like MDs. As fully licensed physicians, DOs prescribe medications, deliver babies, perform surgery, order lab and radiology tests, and make referrals to other doctors, just like MDs.
So
what's the difference between a D.O.
and an M.D?
The difference is that DOs receive additional training in hands-on diagnosis and treatment of the body's anatomy and physiology, which gives them an extra "tool" in their medical toolbox. In addition to prescribing medications and/or performing surgery, this hands-on diagnosis and treatment training gives osteopathic doctors a unique, practical advantage to managing acute and chronic pain and many medical conditions. This distinctive hands-on medical treatment is called osteopathic treatment or osteopathic manual medicine.
